As an event planner, each year at my kids birthdays, I say I am NOT going to go overboard or do anything big. Just order pizza, a few balloons and let them play. But every year comes around and I can’t help myself. This is what I do and I LOVE IT!! My husband just shakes his head. I really try honey, I promise. But once I start thinking about it, talking to the kids about what they want, and planning it, it just takes on a whole new life of its own. So those of you who know me, know that this is my Simple.
Portlin loves us to read to her. Someone gave us a small board book of Olivia and from that point on she was hooked! She named her baby doll from Santa, Olivia… the cat that showed up on our door this fall, is now Olivia… and yes, you guessed it, ALL WE READ now is Olivia!! So when it came time to plan Portlin’s 2nd Birthday party, guess who she wanted to invite? Yup. Olivia. Getting the idea?
One eight foot long banquet table at The Great Lakes Children’s Museum and a 1/2 hour set up time before her friends arrived, and I made my best attempt at SIMPLE….
I knew I wanted to hire my good friend Kenna McDonald at Everything Gal to do some custom red and white desserts. White Chocolate covered cake pops with red bows and cups to match and mini cheesecakes with a fresh raspberry on top. These turned out so cute and tasted delicious!!
What child does not like fresh Strawberries? Portlin and I cut and washed these together and she even helped me dip half the batch in white chocolate!
Here is my little peanut caught red handed in the strawberry bowl! She is standing in front of the handmade “PORTLIN” banner my son and I sewed together. We made a trip to the fabric store (all way too hungry and grumpy) and after a few melt downs and tears, we had supplies to make our banner. Note to self; Don’t drag kids to the craft store when they are hungry, tired and there is a line out the door. Might make mommy cry!! or just respect her finished banner all that much more. I told you, this is my simple.
Drinking sparking juice is always way more fun out of a crazy paper straw
Olivia. Olivia. Olivia.
Ann at Aunt B’s Cakes and Desserts really out did herself with this AMAZING cake!! I told her what I wanted… (tall, red and white strips, Portlin’s name with Happy Birthday and a big Olivia sitting right on top). It turned out better than I had pictured in my head! Everyone loved it!!! Oh and the vintage white cake stand from Everything Gal really helped it stand out (or up)!!
Red Tulips from The Floral Underground helped this winter party feel more like spring!!
I dusted off my old art supply box from Interlochen and got my hands dirty. My girlfriend Elara and I dug out the charcoals and red pastels, and made a fun afternoon of drawing. Why don’t I do that more often? I loved being able to be creative. I am now happy to say the art supplies are in an easier access location and going to make it a regular activity I do with the kids!!
Portlin is turning into such a sweet little girly girl (how did that happen?). She loves to dress up and she wanted to wear her Olivia Shirt (that started out as Christmas jammies last year, then became her Valentines Outfit, and now with her new added Puffy skirt is her new and improved OLIVIA clothes)!!! We had a custom hair flower clip made from our friend Natalie at Tail Feather Designs and Portlin now wants to wear it with ALL her outfits (especially with ones that don’t match)! Got to love Two going on Twelve!!
We had one HAPPY little 2 year old who had a WONDERFUL day!!
